Cambridge Folk Festival 2009

Posted by: Editor

The Cambridge Folk Festival is over for 2009. The official site reports that the festival was a success! Read on for more information on how this year's festival was made 'Green' (please note, these plans were published before the festival)

The Co-operative Cambridge Folk Festival gets underway this week and after winning a Greener Festival Award last year the Festival, organised by Cambridge City Council, is building even further on its success.

The Co-operative Group is the Festival's new title sponsor this year and commenting on the partnership, the Co-operative Sponsorship Manager, Liz Matkin said: ‘Having won last year's Greener Festival Award, we feel that the Festival's organisers and attendees are truly representational of The Co-operative's commitment to ecological sustainability. To be supporting an event such as this will hopefully inspire more people to get involved and raise people's awareness of their personal social responsibility.'

Measures implemented last year included: the introduction of low watt long life lightbulbs; extra static containers to avoid the need for daily beer deliveries; the introduction of a system of re-using plastic pint glasses at Festival bars which this year is being extended to include half pint glasses; no more traders' plastic carrier bags; the composting of all Festival caterers' food waste and campers were issued with recycling bags to help further still on the 33 percent of waste currently recycled at the Festival.

For 2009, further reducing the Festival's carbon footprint is a major priority. Organisers will be measuring all the traffic flow to and around the site, as well as how far they have come and how much fuel they use. This includes all the traders' stalls. The information will help the Festival identify ways in which sensible reductions can be made in future years or alternative ways to produce green fuel.

Festival Manager, Eddie Barcan said: ‘We look forward to building further on our award winning achievements and are especially pleased to be working with The Co-operative, an organisation which champions ethical values and principles and with whom we have so much in common, particularly regarding the environment.'

Executive Councillor at Cambridge City Council, Julie Smith commented "It's great that the Folk Festival was awarded the Greener Festival Award last year but we're not content just to stick with last year's performance - rather we're committed to reducing the Festival's carbon footprint even further this year and in the future."
